The next day, OpenAI launched its enterprise healthcare suite for clinicians, with GPT-5 models rolling out to AdventHealth, HCA Healthcare, Boston Children’s Hospital, Cedars-Sinai, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Stanford Medicine, and UCSF.[1][2]

Two months later, Microsoft launched Copilot Health — connecting to 50,000+ US hospitals via HealthEx, integrating 50+ wearable devices, verified by 230 physicians across 24 countries, and backed by ISO/IEC 42001 certification. Fifty million people were already asking Microsoft health questions every day.[3][4]

Amazon expanded its Health AI assistant in the same period. Anthropic unveiled Claude for Healthcare. Google, having partnered with b.well in October 2025, was staging Gemini for the same move.[5]

This is not one product launch. It is every major AI platform entering the most sensitive, most regulated, most consequential consumer vertical in the economy — simultaneously, within a single quarter. The numbers are staggering: over 230 million people ask health questions on ChatGPT every week. Three in five US adults have used AI for health in the past three months. 66% of physicians were already using AI in their practice by 2024.[1][6][7]

And every single one of these platforms includes the same disclaimer: not intended for diagnosis or treatment. Every single one acknowledges that consumer health AI is not HIPAA compliant. The HIPAA Gap

The most important regulatory fact about consumer health AI in 2026 is also the simplest: HIPAA does not apply. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act covers “covered entities” — healthcare providers, health plans, and clearinghouses. Consumer technology companies are not covered entities. When you share your medical records with ChatGPT Health or Copilot Health, HIPAA does not govern what happens to that data.[1][8]

Every platform knows this. OpenAI does not describe ChatGPT Health as HIPAA compliant.
